Maruti Suzuki, a leader in the Indian automotive industry, is ramping up its efforts to reduce carbon emissions by expanding its use of railway transportation for vehicle distribution. In the last fiscal year, the company transported approximately 25% of its vehicles via railways, marking a significant milestone in its sustainability journey.

Commitment to Eco-Friendly Practices

Speaking after the announcement of the 2023-24 earnings, the Chairman of Maruti Suzuki highlighted the company's dedication to reducing its carbon footprint. With ongoing infrastructure development and collaboration with Indian Railways, Maruti Suzuki aims to steadily increase the proportion of vehicles transported by rail in the coming years.

Future Growth and Expansion

As part of its long-term vision, Maruti Suzuki plans to double its production capacity from 2 million units per annum to 4 million units per annum by 2030-31. This ambitious growth strategy includes a substantial increase in vehicle transport through railways, aligning with the company's commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.

Infrastructure Development Initiatives

Maruti Suzuki recently inaugurated India's first automobile in-plant railway siding at its Gujarat plant, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Once fully operational, this railway siding has the capacity to dispatch 300,000 cars per annum to 15 destinations across India, enhancing efficiency and reducing transportation costs.

Cost-Effective and Time-Efficient Solutions

The shift towards transporting cars via trains instead of trucks not only reduces carbon emissions but also offers cost and time-saving benefits for the company. Maruti Suzuki plans to replicate this infrastructure model by establishing similar railway sidings at its Manesar and Kharkhoda plants in Haryana.

Renewable Energy Initiatives

In addition to enhancing its transportation sustainability, Maruti Suzuki is actively investing in renewable energy sources. With an installed solar capacity of 43MWp, the company aims to generate a significant portion of its power requirements from renewable sources, further contributing to its goal of carbon neutrality.

Alignment with Government Initiatives

Maruti Suzuki is fully aligned with the Indian government's sustainability agenda and aims to support national efforts to achieve carbon neutrality targets by 2070. By integrating renewable energy sources and adopting eco-friendly transportation practices, the company is committed to driving positive environmental change.

Maruti Suzuki's commitment to enhancing rail transportation and adopting renewable energy solutions underscores its dedication to sustainability and environmental stewardship. By leveraging innovative infrastructure and aligning with government initiatives, Maruti Suzuki is paving the way towards a greener and more sustainable future.
